Sara Hemmeke’s mural in downtown Howell is a vibrant example of community-driven art. Painted as part of the Howell Art Project, her mural was created through a collaborative effort where community members participated in a giant paint-by-number activity. This project was designed to bring people together and further beautify the town. Hemmeke, known for her bold use of color and calligraphy, incorporates both in this mural, blending local pride with a bright, dynamic aesthetic. Hemmeke’s other artistic work includes a wide range of calligraphy and graphic design, with a focus on combining bold colors and creative lettering.

The Duane Zemper Memorial in Howell, located at the Howell Carnegie District Library, was created to honor the legacy of Duane Zemper, a beloved community figure. Sculpted by Colin and Kristine Poole, this bronze statue depicts Zemper leaning on a stack of books, symbolizing his lifelong contributions to education, photography, and local history. The stack includes titles reflecting key moments from Zemper’s life, making the piece both interactive and meaningful. Zemper, known for his work as a WWII photographer and his role in founding the Howell Archives, was deeply connected to the Howell community.
