Howell Carnegie District Library

A statement of the architecture in downtown Howell is the iconic Howell Carnegie District Library. Located on the west side of downtown, the public library has been the shape of the community for over 100 years. The library is a hub for knowledge and community, offering services beyond book rentals. The Howell Carnegie District Library offers book rentals, movies and TV shows, puzzles, magazines, and even appliances. The library also has a business resource center, copier station, and study rooms. The multiple study rooms and meeting spaces are available for booking on their website or in person on a first-come, first-served basis. Throughout the year, you can find a variety of events that cater to adults, children, and families.

History of the Space

The Ladies Library Association of Howell was established in 1875. It operated a lending library from a rented house on the back of the square where the present library now stands. By the end of the 19th century, its facilities were not large enough to handle the growing population in the Brighton Howell Area. The library building's restoration and expansion began in 1989 and reopened to a grand public reception in 1991. The rotunda is breathtakingly beautiful, and the majesty of the original building welcomes visitors as they enter and leave the library. The new addition of over 22,000 square feet quietly complements the old Carnegie building of 8,000 square feet.
