Downtown Howell is thriving with creativity, thanks in part to the Howell Art Project. This initiative, spearheaded by Howell Main Street Inc., brings a variety of public art to the community through live mural painting, sculpture installations, and community engagement.

Stacy Karnes‘ Mural – Karnes’ mural captures the spirit of Howell’s community, blending intricate details of the downtown streetscape with hot air balloons floating above – honoring Howell’s largest event Balloonfest hosted by the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce.

The mural created by Stacy Karnes for 2FOG’s Pub in Howell is a striking piece that aligns with the venue’s 1920s speakeasy theme. Located in the alleyway near the pub, this mural features imagery reflecting the prohibition era, blending old-time gangsters with a modern flair. Karnes’ attention to detail brings the history of the speakeasy culture to life, enhancing the pub’s atmosphere.

Kelly Beacome (Factoryrat71) – Kelly Beacome’s mural on Michigan Avenue in downtown Howell is another vibrant addition to the city’s growing public art scene. Known as Factoryrat71, Beacome’s work features bold colors and industrial themes that reflect both his style and the local spirit. This mural contributes to Howell’s commitment to supporting local artists and engaging the community through art. Beacome has also created murals at Aberrant Ales, where he celebrates the town’s brewing culture.

Jessica Hennig – Hennig’s mural at M. Street Baking Company delights with playful, sweet imagery that matches the bakery’s offerings. Her colorful style is a treat for the eyes.

The Duane Zemper Memorial in Howell, located at the Howell Carnegie District Library, was created to honor the legacy of Duane Zemper, a beloved community figure. Sculpted by Colin and Kristine Poole, this bronze statue depicts Zemper leaning on a stack of books, symbolizing his lifelong contributions to education, photography, and local history. The stack includes titles reflecting key moments from Zemper’s life, making the piece both interactive and meaningful. Zemper, known for his work as a WWII photographer and his role in founding the Howell Archives, was deeply connected to the Howell community.
