Howell Opera House

The Howell Opera House, built in 1881, is a three-story historic landmark in downtown Howell, Michigan, that serves the community and surrounding area with a variety of quality programs and events.  It’s the home of the Livingston Arts Council (LAC), a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing quality arts and cultural programs and events; fundraisers, art exhibits, dance programs, concerts, live performances, lectures, and more for the enjoyment of individuals of all ages. The organization has owned and managed the Howell Opera House building since 2000.

When the venue opened its doors, the top two floors housed the theatre where attendees enjoyed a wide variety of productions. Live shows including Gilbert & Sullivan’s “Mikado” and Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” were among the lineup to play at this historic opera house. Theatre shows were not the only kind of entertainment that you could find here. Back in the day, you could enjoy unique shows like juggling and acrobatic acts.

Fun Fact: The Howell Opera House hosted famous speeches by presidential candidates William Jennings Bryant and Henry Ford.
