Kensington Metropark Nature Center
Welcome to the Kensington Metropark Nature Center, your destination to learn about the natural environment of the Brighton Howell Area and beyond. The displays at the educational facility feature local ecosystems, flora, and fauna. The nature center will enlighten you on how the plants and animals you encounter in the park are adapted to and shaped by the land around them!
The Nature Center offers exhibits, both indoor and outdoor, that spotlight the wildlife found at the park. Visitors can witness live reptiles and amphibians native to Michigan’s wetlands. Nearly 20 animals live at the Center full time, and expert staff are nearby to answer questions about the native animals and plants.
The center offers a virtual view of Kensington habitats, animals, and more through short videos, dioramas, and natural artifacts. Plus, you can experience hands-on activities with discovery drawers, touch tests, and the great blue heron “flight simulator.” You won’t be able to miss the amazing collection of taxidermy specimens dating back to the early 1800s, including the mount of a Passenger Pigeon; this bird has been extinct for 100 years and is very rare to see
On your way out, don’t miss the unofficial spokesbird and educational bird of prey, Ranger, the red-tailed hawk. Ranger was rehabilitated at the Howell Nature Center and now lives at the fabulous park. Ranger works as an educational animal ambassador for events around the park.
Outside, there are over 700 acres of forests, fields, fens, and swamps to wander through. The trail to scenic vistas and overlooks throughout the nature center trail area and catch features like the great blue heron rookery island, countless native plants such as tamarack, orchids, ferns, and wildflowers, and hundreds of bird species including pileated woodpeckers, sandhill cranes, bald eagles, and warblers.
