Long before European arrival to the Great Lakes in the 1600s, Michigan was home to the Anishnaabek (Odawa/Ottawa, Ojibway/Chippewa and Bodawatomi/Potawatomi). As the United States celebrates its 250 years of existence, this exhibit explores the story of Michigan's first people and how the United States has impacted the Anishnaabek. From wars to treaties to maneuvering through uncertain political and environmental times, the Anishnaabek have achieved what few tribes in this country have done: remain in their homelands. This exhibit is provided by a grant from Michigan Humanities.
